First Lady Emine Erdoğan, wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been actively involved in social activities since her youth. Mrs. Erdoğan, who has 2 daughters and 2 sons, has practiced the spirit of philanthropy, that she inherited from her family, in all fields of her life and lent her helping hand to thousands of people. She led the foundation of the “Center for Social Development” in 2005 and has supported important projects concerning the education of women and children. Mrs. Erdoğan has also struggled against physical abuse of children and child forced labor and supported several campaigns emphasising the significance of education in early childhood. Mrs. Erdoğan has supported and promoted the projects of many NGOs working to support women, people with disabilities and to provide healthcare and education.

 

Ms Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk

Minister of Family, Labour and Social Services.

Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk graduated from Bilkent University Department of Economics. Has an MS degree in Statistics and Information and a doctorate degree from the University of Texas on Business Management. She has conducted research studies on gender equality, demographics, labour, poverty, education and innovation, data performance systems, accounting and finance. She was the Director of the Statistics and Information Department of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in 2015.

Kathryn Abel

Professor of Psychological Medicine & Reproductive Psychiatry, Director & Founder of the Centre for Women’s Mental Health at the University of Manchester.

Kathryn is an honorary consultant psychiatrist in resistant schizophrenia and family therapy. Her interests include sex differences in mental illness; maternal condition and its effect on offspring cognitive development; parenting as a mediator of maternal effects and the outcomes of children of parents with mental illness.  She has over 200 publications and has edited several books on women and mental health and holds a prestigious European Research Council Science Fellowship, is a National Institutes of Health Research Senior Investigator and the National Lead for Mental Health for the Clinical Research Network.

Consequently, Aboah has become a spokesperson for women of all ages around the world who are looking for a community where they feel welcome and accepted for who they are.

Dr. Lina Abirafeh is the Director of the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World at the Lebanese American University. Her background is in gender-based violence prevention and response in development and humanitarian contexts. She brings over 20 years’ experience in countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal, and others.

Sevda Alkan is a project manager since 2013 at Sabanci University Corporate Governance Forum where she is responsible for Independent Women Directors Project and Business Against Domestic Violence Project. Sevda received her Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism Management at Dokuz Eylul University. She worked in various projects for TOG (Community Volunteers Foundation) as a volunteer and for Turkish Airlines as a part time employee during her studies. Upon graduation she continued to work for Turkish Airlines for a year before moving to UK. She completed her master’s degree in Corporate Environmental Management at the University of Surrey in 2013 where she was mainly focused on the issues of sustainability, corporate social responsibility and energy efficiency issues surrounding the climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Alanna Armitage

Director of UNFPA’s Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Alanna has worked to promote women’s health, development and human rights for the past 25 years. Alanna joined UNFPA in 1992, and has served in Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America where she was UNFPA Representative in Brazil, and Country Director for Argentina and Paraguay. Before her current assignment, she was Director of UNFPA’s Geneva office for seven years.

While, for three years, her activity as a political activist for women's rights is exercised with much passion and willpower contributing to a better future.

Dr. Aditya Bharadwaj

Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr.Aditya Bharadwaj current research focuses on assisted reproductive technologies and infertility in poor resource settings. Through this work he is examining the brutalising social stigma and ostracism associated with medical conditions like infertility. Dr. Bharadwaj's research aims to support the introduction of low cost In-Vitro-Fertilization (IVF) and related assisted reproductive technologies in poor resource settings. He has authored several books and articles. His most recent books are: Conceptions: Infertility and Procreative Technologies in India (Berghahn 2016) and Global Perspectives on Stem Cell Technologies (Palgrave Macmillan 2017).

In the past year, Grace has made a name for herself for making provocative and feisty comedy. In her latest show Riot Girls, for Channel 4, Grace uses pranks and stunts to highlight sexism and inequalities in society. As an activist, Grace co-founded the feminist activist collective, the Pink Protest. The Pink Protest is the home to the #freeperiods campaign, a campaign to end period poverty in the UK.

Chief of the Strategic Partnerships Branch, within the Division of Communications and Strategic Partnerships of UNFPA.

Mariarosa has more than 20 years of professional experience, working for the private sector. Before joining UNFPA, she was the Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Benetton Group, as well as President and CEO of Benetton’s UNHATE Foundation. She has served as director of Valore Sociale per l’Impresa Responsabile (a multi stakeholder corporate social responsibility organisation). On issues relating to corporate sustainability, she has served as a legal expert for various Institutions. She has also worked extensively for the international non-governmental organisation Mani Tese.

Dr. Nilesh Deshpande

Graduated from the Government Medical College, Nagpur, India, he worked as a medical doctor before pursuing his dream to promote public health and ensure basic health care for the most disadvantaged people of the country. He currently manages the UNFPA State Of ce of Madhya Pradesh implementing innovative solutions for adolescent health programs in the state, like safe menstrual health and sanitation practices through manufacturing and social marketing of sanitary pads by adolescent girls.

Seda Domanic

Seda graduated from Georgetown University with magna cum laude honor in International Affairs. She holds a M.A. degree in International Economics from SAIS, John Hopkins University and PhD. degree in Political Science from Sabancı University.  After working as a journalist and a communications consultant for various companies and international organisations, she joined Dogus Group as External Affairs Manager in 2006. Since 2009, she has been the founding Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Turkey. In addition to this role, she has become the President of DMG Publishing Group in 2013. Domanic speaks English, Turkish, Italian and French and she is a certified Yoga Instructor.

Friederike has worked for BMZ for more than ten years and specialises in bringing innovative topics to the toolbox of development cooperation.

Ozlem Kaymaz

Sportswoman and Miss Turkey 1992.

Ozlem is a highly acclaimed sportswoman of prestigious stature, having announced herself to the world as the first Turkish woman to participate in the Sailing World Championships - aged just 16. It was after she became the first woman to appear on a foreign magazine, in the form of Marie Claire, that she was awarded with the coveted title of Miss Turkey in 1992. Married to a Dutch national, Ozlem had her first daughter at the age of 24, however it was the medical complications adjoined to her second pregnancy which saw Ozlem’s son born with a rare condition, leading to him being permanently disabled. Her personal experience and compassion has led to Ozlem being recognised as an advocate for the inclusion and acceptance of disability within the sports industry. She is also a passionate patron for female empowerment and her TED talk in May 2018 amounted to 209,000 views under the title; 'unconditional love'.

Manizha

Self-made artist, singer, composer and songwriter.

Created two albums since 2017 and had 3 sold out shows in Russia within a year. She has turned her Instagram into a personal stage and generated more than 300,000 of loyal community members with no morketing budget, nor paid user acquisition. Manizha has launched the flashmob #BEAUTYTRAUMA and more than a thousand women have shared their self acceptance stories. During one of her recent shows she removed her make up on stage and inspired hundreds of women to defy society imposed beauty standards. Today her main focus is an art project exploring the issues of domestic violence in Russia and dedicated to improvement of the terrifying statistics.

Dr Tamer Seckin MD

World-Renowned Endometriosis Surgeon & Founder of Endometriosis Foundation of America (endofound.org

In private practice in New York City for over 30 years, Dr. Seckin is an internationally recognised specialist in minimally invasive advanced laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis – a disease that is largely misdiagnosed and is the third leading cause of female infertility.  The pain it emits can affect a woman’s career, social life, relationships, sexual activity, sleep, and diet.  In 2009, Dr. Seckin founded EndoFound with actress Padma Lakshmi, the first research and advocacy foundation organised by a private physician that strives to increase disease recognition, provide advocacy, facilitate expert surgical training and fund landmark endometriosis research. Dr. Seckin is an author, lecturer, researcher, and educator who has dedicated his life to ensuring that the 200 million women worldwide suffering from this little-known disease, have access to the care and treatment that they deserve.

Prof. Dr.Zeynep Şimşek has dedicated her professional life to empower women living in rural areas of Turkey. She specifically focused her work on seasonal agricultural workers who were not receiving any other attention. Prof. Dr. Şimşek has been working to empower those women for 15 years. Currently, she is at Bilgi University, UNFPA Turkey’s partner, and working on refugee women. Prof. Dr. Şimşek is instrumental in developing “health mediator” model which is essential part of UNFPA’s Women and Girls Safe Spaces humanitarian aid program in Turkey.

Danijela is medical doctor and a Master of Science in public health, Danijela started her professional career in the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia in 2004. In her 15 year long career, she has been engaged with various health topics, primarily in international health projects. For seven years she was in charge for programming and preparations of projects on the position of a Head of Department for EU Integration and Preparation, Implementation and Monitoring of International Projects. Since August 2017 Danijela has been appointed as Assistant Minister of Health for EU Integration and International Cooperation.
